There have been great societies that did not use the wheel, but there have been no societies that did not tell stories. -- Ursula K. LeGuin

About & Storytelling

Stories and analogies (examples) remain the two best ways of teaching something new with words. Of course, nothing is as effective as the Dewey or Montessori approach of hands-on learning by doing. But in our busy, expensive, safety-conscious world of education, we are often constrained to learning by words.

Video provides a powerful means to tell a story using audio and visual elements. What differentiates a story that has personal impact from one that is a boring home movie? To make a powerful video, you first need to develop a compelling story. Next the story needs to be told in a way that uses the available tools to build and deliver each aspect of the story in a way that has the desired impact or effect.

While this is both an art and a science, good storytelling is probably more art than science. The good part is that we can all learn how to be better storytellers.

The destiny of the world is determined less by the battles that are lost and won than by the stories it loves and believes in.
-- Harold Goddard (The Meaning of Shakespeare)
